At the White House jobs summit on December 3, 2009, President Barack Obama warned against closing the door on foreign students, calling them one of the country's "greatest competitive advantages." It's possible, he said, that some of those who choose to stay in the U.S. could end up creating "extraordinary businesses" like Intel Corp. [ more ]

Update on the H-1B Cap Count - 12/15/09
As of December 11, 2009, approximately 62,900 H-1B cap-subject petitions had been filed. USCIS has approved sufficient H-1B petitions for aliens with advanced degrees to meet the exemption of 20,000 from the fiscal year 2010 cap. Any H-1B petitions filed on behalf of an alien with an advanced degree will now count toward the general H-1B cap of 65,000. USCIS will continue to accept both cap-subject petitions and advanced degree petitions until a sufficient number of H-1B petitions have been received to reach the statutory limits, taking into account the fact that some of these petitions may be denied, revoked, or withdrawn. US Supreme court to rule on deportation issue - 12/15/09
The Supreme Court has agreed to consider whether immigrants convicted of repeat, minor drug possession crimes should be subject to deportation. The justices said Monday they will hear an appeal from Jose Angel Carachuri-Rosendo, who was deported to his native Mexico after pleading no contest to possessing one tablet of the anti-anxiety drug Xanax without a prescription. Department of State (DOS) Announces Worldwide Deployment of the DS-160 - 12/15/09
DOS Bureau of Consular Affairs announced that it will deploy the DS-160 fully web-based nonimmigrant visa (NIV) application form worldwide. Complete global usage of DS-160 for all NIVs except Ks is expected by April 30, 2010. DS-160 replaces the Electronic Visa Application Form (EVAF). [ more ]

USCIS Launches Immigration Inquiry Mailbox for Canadian Customers - 12/15/09
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) today announced the creation of a general inquiry mailbox for customers in Canada. Currently Canadians cannot access the National Customer Service Center through the 1-800 number to ask about general immigration questions. Canadian customers may now inquire about general immigration information at USCIS.Canada@dhs.gov in addition to obtaining immigration information at www.uscis.gov. [ more ]

Immigrant Detention Doubles Since 1999 - 12/04/09
"The number of immigrants in detention in the United States has more than doubled since 1999, according to a new report from a government data research organization released Wednesday. The report, based primarily on information obtained through the Freedom of Information Act from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, also finds that ICE has increasingly transferred detainees more often and to facilities farther from where they were apprehended, disrupting contact with family members and attorneys attempting to represent them in their deportation cases."
