"The Department of Homeland Security is preparing to abandon a visitor-registration program that primarily affects Muslim men and caused widespread confusion and protests earlier this year after thousands of people who complied were arrested or ordered deported, according to several government officials." Canada's Immigration Minister announced an unprecedented program this week that would grant undocumented construction workers legal status in Canada - 11/18/03
The initiative is the first official acknowledgement of the illegal population since a 1986 amnesty. Although the census doesn't track the number of undocumented people living in Canada, industry studies and experts put the figure at somewhere between 100,000 to 200,000. [ more ]

US Senate Votes to Extend Employment Eligibility Verification Pilot Program and EB-5 Regional Center Pilot Program - 11/15/03
The Senate passed by unanimous consent S.1685, a bill to extend the employment eligibility pilot program for 5 years and to expand it to all 50 states. The bill would also require a report on how to resolve problems with the program. Attached to S. 1685 was a measure to extend EB-5 regional centers for an additional 5 years. [ more ]

Illegal immigrants arrested in raids sue Wal-Mart - 11/14/03
Nine illegal immigrants who worked as janitors at Wal-Mart until they were arrested during federal raids last month have sued the company, accusing it of discrimination. The plaintiffs, who now face deportation, were among 250 people arrested in an October 23 federal immigration crackdown at 60 Wal-Mart stores in 21 states. [ more ]
