White Houses Announces the Inclusion of 7 Countries in the Visa Waiver Program - 10/20/08
The White House discussed the expansion of the visa waiver program to seven new countries including the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, and South Korea. These countires have met the requirements to be admitted to the United States Visa Waiver Program. Soon the citizens of these nations will be able to travel to the United States for business or tourism without a visa. [ more ]

DHS and Michigan Sign Agreement to Enhance Security Features of the State's Driver's Licenses - 10/15/08
On 10/13/08 DHS announced that it reached an agreement with the state of Michigan to enhance the security features of the state’s driver’s license, which may serve in the future as an acceptable alternative document for compliance with WHTI requirements. Michigan residents who hold a Michigan drivers license will be able to enter the US from Canada without a passport. [ more ]

USCIS INCREASES PERIOD OF STAY FOR TRADE-NAFTA PROFESSIONAL WORKERS FROM CANADA AND MEXICO - 10/15/08
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has increased the maximum period of time a Trade-NAFTA (TN) professional worker from Canada or Mexico may remain in the United States before seeking readmission or obtaining an extension of stay. This final rule changes the initial period of admission for TN workers from one to three years, making it equal to the initial period of admission given to H-1B professional workers. [ more ]

Agreement allows Michiganians to cross border without passport - 10/14/08
State and federal officials signed an agreement Monday that will allow U.S. citizens in Michigan the option of using a driver's license, rather than a more costly passport, to cross the U.S.-Canada border when tougher security rules take effect next June. [ more ]

An expensive cervical cancer vaccine is now needed by young female immigrants before they can become legal U.S. residents, a requirement that immigration advocates say is unfair. Federal officials recently added the Gardasil vaccine to a list of vaccinations that immigrants must have before they can obtain green cards. Congress Passes Military Personnel Citizenship Processing Act - 10/03/08
On September 28, 2008, the House passed the Military Personnel Citizenship Processing Act (S. 2840), a measure that would speed up the naturalization process for military personnel and veterans. The measure, introduced by Sen. Schumer (D-NY), would require that USCIS process and issue a citizenship decision within six months of receiving an application from a current or former member of the armed forces, or their surviving dependents. If a decision is not made within that time frame, USCIS would be required to explain the delay and provide a new decision target date. The bill would also establish an FBI liaison office inside USCIS and processing deadlines for other naturalization applications. The bill, already passed by the Senate, now heads to the President for final approval. [ more ]

The House has passed, by a voice vote, a bill to extend the Conrad 30 program (H.R. 5571).
