Senate Shatters Students’ DREAM - 10/25/07
WASHINGTON, DC - In a stunning display of heartlessness and gutlessness, the Senate voted today to quash the dreams and aspirations of hundreds of thousands of American students. The 52-44 vote in favor of proceeding to debate on the DREAM Act (S. 2205) fell eight votes short of the necessary 60 vote threshold. That eight-vote shortfall means a generation of American kids will remain stranded at the schoolhouse door. And while the vote is a nightmare for children, families, educators, and military recruiters throughout the country, it will also haunt the long-term political fortunes of those Senators standing on the wrong side of justice. USCIS Interim Rule On Adopted Children Under Hague Convention - 10/04/07
USCIS issued an interim rule to establish new administrative procedures for the immigration of children who are adopted by U.S. citizens and who come from countries that are parties to the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption. [ more ]

Detroit immigration official and others indicted on bribery charges - 10/02/07
According to the Detroit news, a top immigration official in Detroit has been indicted by a federal grand jury for accepting tens of thousands of dollars in bribes to release aliens who were supposed to be deported and facilitate other immigration frauds. DOL Announces that the Permanent Labor Certification Backlog Has Been Eliminated - 10/02/07
DOL announced that the permanent foreign labor certification program's backlog has been eliminated, with nearly 99 percent of cases completed and the remainder awaiting responses from employers. The BECs have begun a transition and shutdown phase that will continue through December. [ more ]

USCIS Announces New Naturalization Test - 10/01/07

DREAM Act failed to get a vote as an amendment to the Department of Defense authorization bill. - 10/01/07
Although the DREAM Act did not get a vote on that bill, Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV) pledged Wednesday evening that it will be brought to the Senate floor for a vote sometime before November 16th. If passed, the "Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act" would facilitate access to college for immigrant students in the U.S. The "DREAM Act" would also provide a path to permanent residence for ambitious immigrant youth who were brought to the U.S. as young children and who want to pursue higher education or military service, enabling them to contribute fully to our society.
