The Proposed Refugee Admissions for Fiscal Year 2007: Report to the Congress was submitted by the Department of State (DOS) on behalf of the President in compliance with Section 207(e) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The report discusses the number and allocation of refugees to be admitted to the U.S.; the conditions of their countries of origin; the estimated cost for their movement and resettlement; the anticipated social, economic, and demographic impact of their admission; the extent to which other countries will admit and assist in the resettlement of such refugees and the impact of refugee resettlement on U.S. foreign policy interests.

DOL to Notify Attorneys of Each Stage in the E-mail Sponsorship Verification Process - 10/27/06
According to AILA-DOL Liaison Committee, beginning October 20, 2006, DOL will notify attorneys of each stage in the e-mail sponsorship verification process. Attorneys will receive a copy of an email to the employer confirming that the case has been filed, a copy of the sponsorship check email and a copy of an acknowledgement that the employer has responded to the sponsorship check. USCIS Announces Changes to I-539 Student Reinstatement Processing - 10/27/06
USCIS announced on October 25, 2006 that beginning October 30, 2006 local USCIS offices will forward new filings for Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status, for F-1 and M-1 student reinstatement, to the California Service Center or the Vermont Service Center, depending on where the student is engaged in study. Applicants filing for student reinstatement will receive a receipt notice from the service center that will process their application. USCIS District Offices will continue to process student reinstatement cases received before October 30, 2006 using existing procedures. Local USCIS offices will continue to accept I-539 filings specifically for the purpose of student reinstatement until provisions are in place allowing for direct mail filing. The change is being implemented in preparation for Phase 3 of Bi-specialization. [ more ]

President Bush Signs Secure Fence Act of 2006 - 10/27/06
President Bush signed the Secure Fence Act of 2006 (H.R. 6061) into law today. This legislation authorizes 700 miles of fencing along the Southwest border with Mexico. To date, however, Congress has only appropriated a small fraction of the more than $7 billion it would cost to erect such a structure. The current appropriation of $1.18 billion, provided for in the DHS Appropriations Act of 2007, will only fund 90 miles of fence, according to experts. [ more ]
