DHS Begins Test of Biometric Exit Procedures at Two U.S. Airports - 05/28/09
DHS announced that it began collecting biometric fingerprints from non-U.S. citizens departing the U.S. from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on 5/28/09 as part of a pilot program. [ more ]

USCIS Updates FY 2010 H-1B Count - 05/19/09
On 5/18/09 USCIS updated its count of FY 2010 cap-subject H-1B petitions, and advanced degree cap-exempt petitions. As of May 18, 2009, approximately 45,500 H-1B cap-subject petitions had been received. The agency continues to accept petitions subject to the general cap. Also, it has received approximately 20,000 petitions qualifying for the advanced degree cap exemption. USCIS will continue to accept advanced degree petitions, stating that experience has shown that not all petitions received are approvable. [ more ]
U.S. to Expand Immigration Checks to All Local Jails - 05/19/09
"The Obama administration is expanding a program initiated by President George W. Bush aimed at checking the immigration status of virtually every person booked into local jails. In four years, the measure could result in a tenfold increase in illegal immigrants who have been convicted of crimes and identified for deportation, current and former U.S. officials said." DOL to Keep Old LCA System Operational Through June 30, 2009 - 05/14/09
The Department of Labor has informed AILA liaison that they will keep the old LCA system operational through June 30, 2009. The DOL has implemented fixes to many of the issues brought to their attention by AILA and other stakeholders thus far. The decision to keep the old LCA system operational will allow the DOL to continue to evaluate issues brought to their attention and to give users additional time to become familiar with the system. Supreme Court rules against government in immigration identity-theft case - 05/05/09
In a 9-0 decision, the justices say the crime is limited to those who knew they had stolen another person's Social Security number. The decision limits efforts to prosecute illegal workers. [ more ]
