Senate Returns to Immigration Debate Next Week - 05/11/06
Majority Leader Frist announced on the Senate Floor this morning that the full Senate will begin considering S. 2611, the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2006, on Monday, May 15. Sen. Frist reiterated that he would like to pass a bill before the Memorial Day Recess, which begins on May 29. He said he expects "a considerable number" of amendments to be considered and voted on during several full days of debate. Sen. Frist and Minority Leader Reid have also reached an agreement on the composition of a conference committee that would negotiate a final bill with the House. There will be 26 Senators on the committee, including the top 7 Republicans and top 5 Democrats from the Senate Judiciary Committee. Sen. Frist and Sen. Reid will each appoint 7 additional Senators to the committee. [ more ]

Government to Withdraw Regulation Barring “Arriving Aliens” in Proceedings from Adjusting Status - 05/11/06
In an interim rule to be published in the Federal Register May 12, 2006, EOIR and USCIS will amend the regulations and delete the absolute bar on an “arriving alien’s” ability to adjust status if he or she is in removal proceedings. The interim rule amends the regulations so that USCIS will have jurisdiction over adjustment applications notwithstanding the removal proceedings. [ more ]

DHS Unveils New Interior Enforcement Strategy; Increase in ICE Sweep and Arrest Activity Reported - 05/02/06
