Immigration can detain illegal immigrants indefinitely, Ashcroft rules - 04/30/03
Illegal immigrants could be held indefinitely without bond if their cases present national security concerns, under a decision by Attorney General John Ashcroft. The order means aliens will not be released on bond while their cases are decided by immigration judges if the government can show national security issues are involved. Click here to read the story. BCIS Authorized to Accept "ONLINE" filing - 04/27/03
For the first time in history, applicants for immigration benefits will soon be able to file two key immigration applications using the Internet. Applications such as application for work permit, Form I-765s and application to replace alien registration card, Form I-90s are expected to be the first forms involved, and will require collection of biometrics at an ASC before the cards can be issued. The State Department Waiver Review Division will be implementing a number of changes to the on-line system to make the reports more current, more accurate, and more informative. The process of upgrading will involve some database reconfiguration, which will take place concurrently with other database upgrades over the next 90 days or so. Michigan Changes Acceptance Dates for Conrad 30 Applications - 04/27/03
The following is an excerpt from an email from the J-1 Waiver Program Manager at the Michigan Health Council: Michigan Department of Community Health has changed the date for the J-1 waiver application acceptance this year. They will be accepting applications June 9-13, 2003. The application guideline packets are now available. To request a packet, submit a check for $50 payable to the Michigan Health Council, at 2410 Woodlake Drive, Okemos MI 48864. The California Service Center has changed the timing of fingerprint appointments for pending I-485 applications. They will now schedule print appointments approximately 9 months after the I-485 is filed. The CSC has instituted this change to avoid having the prints expire by the time the case is adjudicated. ACLU Seeks Disclosure of "Secret Law" on Local Police Enforcement of Federal Immigration Laws - 04/16/03
The American Civil Liberties Union today filed a lawsuit seeking disclosure of a new Department of Justice policy granting local police unprecedented powers to enforce non-criminal immigration laws. You must register at a designated Immigration Office on or before April 25, 2003 if you are a citizen or nationals of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, or Kuwait, if you are a male born on or before February 24, 1987, and if you were inspected by an immigration officer and last admitted to the U.S. as a nonimmigrant on or before September 30, 2002. This does not apply to those who have an application for asylum pending on or before January 16, 2003. [ more ]

The Student Adjustment Act of 2003(H.R.1684) introduced by Representatives Cannon, Berman, and Roybal-Allard. This bipartisan legislation will allow immigrant students who have grown up in this country, graduated from high school, and have no criminal record, to go to college and legalize their immigration status. H.R. 1684 recognizes that some of our best and brightest students are prevented from reaching their potential. Thousands of young people each year are prevented from pursuing their dreams of going to college because they have no immigration status and, without the option of in-state tuition, lack sufficient resources. The following information regarding how the fact that most Service Centers are taking more than 90 days to issue the work authorization card. BICE says that none of the Iraqi's it interviewed possess a threat potential - 04/07/03
The Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement has completed its interviews of Iraqi nationals in Dearborn and Detroit, Michigan. "In about a week-and-a-half time, we talked to several hundred people, and now the several hundred people, the vast majority ended up being legal status here, either naturalizing or in status. Law lets UK strip 'abusive' dual nationals of citizenship - 04/01/03
New immigration powers that would let Britain strip dual nationals of their UK citizenship could be used against Muslim cleric. United Kingdom introduced new asylum laws today that allow the government to revoke citizenship for people that abuse the privilege. Secretary Ridge says that "at this time, that is not something that is presently under consideration. But let's not suggest that some time down the road it might not be." [ more ]
