On March 14, 2008, Stveven N. Garmo spoke to the Oakland Coalition of Hispanic Services Agencies (OCOHSA) regarding issues facing immigrants and the fear faced by undocumented workers. He also discussed Bush administration proposed Guest Worker program, the difficulty faced by the immigrant community to obtain a Michigan Drivers License, the proposed Dream Act that will help students normalize their status in the US and many other issues facing the immigrant community in Michigan. The U.S. government has announced higher civil fines against employers for immigration violations. The new rule will take effect on March 27, 2008. Unlawful employment of aliens can be based on either actual knowledge or constructive knowledge that a foreign national is not authorized to work for the company. [ more ]
USCIS issued an Update regarding revised instructions for Form I-131, Application for Travel Document. The revised instructions include changes for re-entry permit and refugee travel document applicants. - 03/06/08
WASHINGTON –U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued revised instructions for USCIS Form I-131, Application for Travel Document. The instructions include changes, which will become effective March 5, 2008, that require applicants for re-entry permits and refugee travel documents to provide biometrics (e.g., fingerprints and photographs) at a USCIS Application Support Centers (ASC) for background and security checks and requirements for secure travel and entry documents containing biometric identifiers. As indicated in the instructions, when the biometrics requirement becomes effective, USCIS will notify applicants of their appointment at the designated ASC after submission of the I-131 application. DOS Issues Final Rule on Termination of Immigrant Visa Registration - 03/03/08
This rule revises the procedure for notifying the beneficiary of an immigrant visa petition of the termination of the immigrant visa registration because of the failure of the beneficiary to pursue the application within a specified time, by providing that such notification will be made by National Visa Center directly to the beneficiary. Quick passport service office to open in Detroit - 03/03/08
The U.S. State Department will open an emergency passport agency in Detroit this year, eliminating the need for Michiganders with urgent passport needs to go all the way to Chicago. [ more ]
