A federal jury acquitted Tyson Foods and three other defendants on all charges in an immigrant conspiracy case Wednesday. Tyson and the other three defendants were accused of hiring illegal immigrants from Mexico and Central America as part of a nationwide conspiracy to boost production and profits. U.S. Citizen gets prison term for sending money to Iraq - 03/27/03
He insisted that the money was intended to go to relatives of immigrants for housing, medical care and other basic needs. Federal law prohibits sending money to Iraq. Investigators found no evidence the money was used to finance terrorism. [ more ]
President says DHS working hard to improve data-sharing capabilities between agencies - 03/27/03
IN a press release, the president in a letter to various congressional committes states that DHS will work to virtually consolidate or link watch lists from multiple agencies and create a homeland security portal for users at all levels of government. Additionally, consular officers and immigration inspectors have access to more complete intelligence and criminal history information through the Interagency Border Inspection System (IBIS) and the Consular Lookout and Support System (CLASS). Since September 11, more than seven million names of persons with Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) records were added to CLASS so that now it contains approximately 13 million name records from DOS, DHS, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and intelligence resources. The U.S. Customs Service has also provided 20,000 name records of serious violators to CLASS. The CLASS now has over 78,000 records of suspected terrorists, up 40 percent in the past year. [ more ]

SSA Proposed Rule Would Codify Restrictions on Issuance of SSNs for Non-Work Purposes - 03/26/03
The Social Security Administration published on 3/26/2003 a rule in the Federal Register to further restrict issuance of Social Security Cards for Non-Work purposes and to require an in-person interview for all individuals age 12 or older who are applying for an original SSN. [ more ]

As a result of military action in Iraq, U.S. Government facilities worldwide will remain at a heightened state of alert and some have drawn down their dependents and/or personnel. These facilities may temporarily close or suspend public services from time to time for security reasons. In those instances, U.S. embassies and consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to American citizens. BCIS to start uniform Naturalization test that asks would-be U.S. citizens about English, American history and other topics - 03/16/03
Immigration officers in Newark, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Calif., and Atlanta will be the first in the country to be trained in administering a prospective version of the citizenship test. Change in the visitor visa rules pulled - 03/09/03
The Bush administration has withdrawn a plan tightening visa rules that let foreign visitors spend half the year in the United States. Critics warned that the proposal would hurt the economy. The Department of Justice dropped the rule change Friday, hours before the new Department of Homeland Security took over enforcement of immigration laws for the federal government.
