INS Announces New Rule for the Adjustment of Status of Certain Nationals from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos - 01/29/03
The adjustment of status rule provides permanent immigration benefits to eligible individuals from three countries—Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Following the Vietnam War, many individuals from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos were paroled into the United States and have remained in an indefinite immigration status since.

State Dept. Instructs Consular Posts to Re-Submit Security Clearance Requests - 01/16/03
The State Department AILA Liaison Committee has learned that the Visa Office has instructed posts to re-submit security clearance requests, using the required format, for cases submitted on or before August 15, 2002, that have not yet been cleared. For cases pending since on or before August 15, 2002, members should contact consular posts, determine whether there has been a resubmission, and, if not, request resubmission.

Court Grants Class Certification in the AILF Asylee Adjustment Lawsuit - 01/15/03
On January 14, 2003, the District Court for the District of Minnesota granted the Plaintiffs' Motion for Class Certification and certified a national class and four subclasses of asylees awaiting adjustment in Ngwaniya v. Ashcroft.

Five More Countries Added to Call-In Registration - 01/15/03
Nonimmigrant males aged 16 or over who are citizens or nationals of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan and Kuwait who entered after 9/30/02 will be subject to call-in special registration between 2/24/03 and 3/28/03.

INS Removes Arabic Notice on Special Registration from INS Website - 01/11/03
INS has removed from its website an Arabic-language notice that erroneously indicated that people must register who "entered the US legally on or AFTER" September 30, 2002. It should have referred to people who entered "on or BEFORE 9/30".

INS Issues Foreign Travel Advisory for Aliens with Pending Adjustment Applications - 01/08/03
The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) reminds aliens who have applied to adjust status to that of permanent resident that they must obtain Advance Parole (Form I-131-- Application for Travel Document) from the INS before traveling abroad. [ more ]

How Do I Report a Change of Address to the INS? - 01/08/03
All non-U.S. citizens (aliens) who are required to be registered are also required to keep the INS informed of their current address. This is particularly important when you have filed an application or petition for a benefit under the Immigration and Nationality Act and expect notification of a decision on that application. In addition, INS may need to contact you to provide other issued documents or return original copies of evidence you submitted. You can find the form for change of address under forms/immigration. Final Rule for Student and Exchange Visitor - 01/08/03
The Department of Justice announced the final rule that implements the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). SEVIS will allow the United States to ensure that foreign students and exchange visitors who have entered the United Sates to study in schools actually enroll in those schools.

INS Memo states that I-140, petition for immigrant nurse can be approved if the state confirms passage of the NCLEX-RN exam and eligibility for a license. - 01/08/03
INS memo from Thomas Cook states that I-140, petition for Immigrant Worker for nurse can be approved if the state confirms passage of the NCLEX-RN exam and eligibility for a license in that state. The memo is meant to overcome the problem with inability to obtain licenses because social security numbers could not be obtained.
