STATEMENT FROM ATTORNEY GENERAL ABBOTT REGARDING THE FEDERAL SENTENCING OF MARIA ELENA GARZA FOR DEFRAUDING HUNDREDS OF NORTH TEXAS IMMIGRANTS AUSTIN * Attorney General Greg Abbott issues the following statement as a result of the sentencing of Maria Elena Garza and two family members, who were convicted in federal court earlier this year for perpetrating a long-running scheme defrauding hundreds of immigrant families in and around the city of Seven Points, located near Dallas. Attorney General Abbott worked with the U.S. Attorney's Office and local law enforcement to investigate and bring charges against Garza and her accomplices in November of 2003. He filed an independent civil lawsuit against Garza, which in February of this year resulted in a $1.4 million judgment. Yesterday Garza was sentenced to 97 months in federal prison for her crimes. "I am very grateful to the U.S. Attorney's Office for its quick and decisive criminal enforcement action against Ms. Garza and her associates. Since becoming Attorney General, I have maintained that Texas has no room for those who seek to defraud hardworking immigrants. Maria Elena Garza made thousands of dollars by telling families she could obtain work permits, permanent residency and other benefits for them. She delivered on none of her promises, and she will now pay a heavy price. "I look forward to continuing to work with law enforcement at every level throughout Texas to ensure that criminals like Ms. Garza face the justice they deserve."
