The Department of Home Land Security has published the interim regulation "suspending" the re-registration requirements for NSEERS. Despite media reports, Special Registration is NOT being eliminated.

The department of Home Land Security has published the interim regulation "suspending" the re-registration requirements for NSEERS. Despite media reports, Special Registration is NOT being eliminated. It is important to note that only the 30-day and one-year re-registration requirements are going away. The interim regulation will leave open the possibility of re-instituting re-registration for selected groups or individuals. But, looking at the positive points, suspending the 30-day and one-year re-registration requirements will provide immediate relief for those subject to these requirements.

It is important to note that this “suspension” will only apply prospectively. It will not apply to anyone who has or had a deadline pass before the publication of the regulation. Those who don’t comply with the rules will suffer the consequences.

Lastly, it's important to note that departure registration remains in place, as does POE registration. The notice does provide some expanded processes and criteria for getting a waiver of the departure registration requirement, and exempts crewmen from the departure requirement.
